"But she needs you to gain Camelot" Mythian said frowning "so she can not get rid of you"

"Who knows," Mordred replied. "I cannot predict her." Allowing himself to fall back onto the bed, he muttered, "Can we rest now? I'm tired and we're both sick."

Mythian laid down beside him "yes, it's time to rest" she said after a moment.

Mordred simply nodded, before stretching out to his full length and closing his eyes.


As he followed Merlin away from the infirmary, Gawain called, "Master Merlin, why do you hate my brother?"

Merlin did't stop walking as he answered "what reason do you want first? The rumors about his mother and our king, making his heritage, the prophecy, or his simple insolence and evil?"

Gawain frowned as he quickened his stride to walk at the older man's side. "I wouldn't call my brother evil, per say, just a bit...dark? The rumors aren't his fault, and we share the same mother yet you don't reject me. Insolence is a family trait. And what prophecy?" Nearly tripping over a loose chicken, he added, "Could you slow down?"

"I have many things to do Gawain, and yes I am aware it is not his fault, but it has made him Your mothers ultimate pawn piece, as for the prophecy, I can not speak of it with you, and you are not so insolent as your brother" Merlin explained as he hurried.

"Oh come on, Merlin," Gawain complained as he fought to keep up with the sorcerer, amazed not for the first time by the man's athleticism. "Mordred's got more to him than being a pawn. Why can't you tell me about the prophecy? It has to do with my family after all. Shouldn't I know?"

Merlin finally made it back to his hut outside the castle. He looked at Gawaine and considered it for a moment before sighing. "Fine then, come in"  Merlin said entering his hut

"Thank you," Gawain bowed, remembering that he did owe the man respect. That was one thing he was often scolded for; he often treated everyone as an equal, even when ranked above him. Ducking into the hut, Gawain whistled in awe. "Impressive."

Merlin was unpacking his bag as he talked "you can take a seat, oh yes the prophecy" Merlin said sitting in one of the mismatched chairs. "Before your brother was borne, or even conceived, there was a prophecy... 'the son of the king, the son of the queen of two different lands will be borne, he who bears these blood relations will come to fight dark and light, but shall fall, and take the king with him' it is saying Mordred will kill king Arthur."

For several moments, Gawain remained silent, absorbing what Merlin had told him. Finally, he shook his head and ran a hand through his light brown hair. "I don't understand; Mordred has no reason to kill King Arthur. And what does it mean by fight dark and light, but shall fall? Who is he facing? It sounds like he falls as well. But fall doesn't always mean death. Perhaps a fall from power?" With a frustrated sigh, he rose and began to pace. "The future isn't set in stone right? Can this be prevented?"

Merlin crossed his arms leaning back "light and dark could be king Arthur and your mother, and yes, when king Arthur dies...he will die too. And with that will go the great peace kingdom that is Camelot, and we are fairly certain it is death. We are trying our best to stop it, but what we do could make it worse"

Gawain swore, something he often avoided but this seemed worthy. "What have you tried? Was there anything else to the prophecy that mentioned a way to prevent it? Don't doomsday prophecies have those?" He froze as a thought struck him, and, brown eyes blazing, he turned on Merlin. "My uncle knows about this doesn't he? That's why he's always been cold to Mordred!"

Merlin shook his head "of course the king doesn't know! We can't worry him with such a thing! He has always been cold to Mordred because Mordred is his son, and heir, but the son son of incest he is. And we are trying, trying to find a way to stop it, I even tried killin Mordred when he was a boy!"

"You tried to kill...nevermind," Gawain growled. Pacing again, he glared around the room. "There has to be another way to help him without trying to kill him."

Merlin shrugged "I tried to make piece with the boy, but he did not go for it, no, stay out of it Gawain...perhaps Lady Mythian will turn him around..."

"Of course he wouldn't go for it; you tried to kill him," Gawain sighed. Almost to himself, he added, "How can I stay out of it when he's my brother?"

"Because your in King Arthur's service now." Merlin pointed out.

"Family ties are as important as loyalty ties," Gawain countered. "I'll stay out of it as best I can, but I cannot promise anything." As he went to the door, he turned back to Merlin. "At least try to find a way to prevent this."

"I have been trying" Merlin said as he started his work.

As he left, Gawain decided to find Mythian the next day, if only to ask her to look after his brother.


Morning light streaming through Mythian's window woke Mordred up. With a groan, he burrowed deeper into the covers.

Mythian chuckled at Mordred then went and closed the curtains. "Mordred, am feeling much better, and today we have the day off from our usual schedule, So I am going to go through the village"

"It's too early to be awake," he mumbled, pulling the covers over his head. "Don't forget to take the medicine Merlin left."

Mythian nodded "I won't, I'll take a vile with me and leave you one" she said and left.

Mythian walked through town, looking st jewelry and cloth and ribbon.

Gawain yawned. He'd just gotten off the night shift and was head back to the barracks when he spotted Mythian among the shops. Careful not to startle her, he joined her. "Morning, my lady. What brings you out here? Where's Mordred? I thought he'd be with you."

Mythian glanced up "Sir Gawain" she curtsied a little "and Mordred is sleeping in on this day, and I just needed some fresh air"

Returning her bow, Gawain laughed. "Sounds like my brother. Would you like some company?"

Mythian smiled "yes, that would be lovely...what brings you out here?"

"I just finished my turn on patrol," he replied. "Is there anything specific you're looking for?"
