A message? As if he would have listened. Grand gestures seemed to be the only way she could make herself heard, and taunting him in his own space had seemed pretty grand to her at the time.

His laughter turned the anger in her stomach to something bitter, and her lip curled as he gripped her wrist and pulled, erasing the gap between them as he brushed her curls out of her eyes. Why the hell did he care? She was a relatively insignificant goddess. He could have disengaged any time he pleased, and yet here they were.

"Would you have listened if I hadn't?" She snarked, twisting her wrist experimentally in his grasp before giving up with a derisive snort. "It most certainly takes two, as they say, which raises the question of why you even gave me the time of day."

"Surely an important god like yourself must have better things to do than to listen to the whining of a minor deity." She laughed, her smile turning sugary sweet. "You could have thrown me out any time you liked, and yet you put up with me."

"Perhaps, perhaps not," Ares smirked. There was just as equal a chance that he would have ignored the message as much as he would have actually pretended to care and listen to the message. "We'll never know, now will we?"

When she'd tugged, he'd kept hold not willing to lost her again so soon. She had invaded his territory, she now how to pay the price. However, at her questions he arched his brow. She didn't see it did she? The reason he 'put up' with her. Ares had long wanted more than just her body as far back before daddy dearest had decided to help the lord of the Underworld claim Persephone. The reason he'd antagonized and annoyed her, pushed her until she was at the end of her patience was to see her crack. Through those cracks he could see what he'd always perceived she could be rather than the facade he believed she wore for others. There was the real her just waiting to shine through those cracks.

Perhaps in his arrogance, Ares had wanted to be the one to have her see what she could be. He'd thought that he had helped establish a bit of that already and had helped her see even for a moment during their time together. Knowing that any sort of relationship he would try with her was doomed to fail, and it had come crashing down, he'd gone ahead anyway. Perhaps this was his own way of sabotaging himself. There had only ever been one person on Olympus who had ever seen through his games and in the part of himself that he didn't want to admit, Ares had hoped that Persephone might be the second.

"I could have thrown you out," he admitted. The hand that had pushed back her hair caressed her neck, his gaze following its trail. He still should. If he was smart. But when had he ever been accused of that? Mentally he snorted and decided to keep to script. "But where would the fun be in that?"

"Apparently not," Persephone grumbled at his non-committal answers. She'd never been a good liar, and he had a way of wringing the truth out of her while never showing his own hand. It was infuriating, and yet she couldn't help but be curious about what he wasn't saying. Maybe that was why she hadn't just gone to ground and ignored his machinations.

Or maybe she'd just finally lost her mind. There was a 50/50 chance either way.

What she didn't understand was why he bothered with her at all. She was the Queen of the Underworld in name only, her political savvy was laughable, and her 'special talents' were limited to encouraging plant life to grow. If he was looking for an ally against the other Olympians, he'd made a terrible mistake. What was she going to do, threaten Daddy Dearest with a sheaf of wheat?

"Masochist," she muttered, pointedly ignoring the trail his fingertips were tracing down the side of her neck and collarbone. It wasn't an unpleasant sensation - quite the opposite in fact - but it was more than a little annoying to be getting giddy when she was supposed to be angry with him.

He'd been needling her for as long as she could remember, long before Daddy Dearest had given her dear husband permission to steal her away. She always rose to his bait eventually, and she hated herself for it. He seemed to revel in her anger and frustration, and she hated giving him what he wanted. What kind of Olympian was she if she couldn't keep a cool head?

A very poor one indeed.

Re: A Fine Frenzy

The corners around Ares' eyes crinkled just the slightest as amusement filled him briefly from her answer and the rhetorical comment. The intoxicating feeling he got whenever he was around the goddess changed. It hadn't stopped, just sort of changed flavor. Where he'd been getting heady from her anger, which he could now tell was decreasing, it still didn't change how he perceived her. Where her anger before had been fueling his power and he was feeding off of it; his lips curled up in a pleasure, her presence hadn't shrunk or deflated at all. Whenever she decided to challenge him she became like that and he took delight in it. This, was no different. Whether she was angry at him, or he was able to stoke her desire, she always rose up to the challenge.

"Perhaps," he agreed with her. They were perfectly matched in that area. People, this particular goddess herself, had accused him of being a sadist before. Yet, he knew he was equally masochistic. Why else would he have pursued both Aphrodite as well as Persephone as he had? "Or perhaps not."

Where she had locked herself away, Ares was sure there was a sadistic person. How could she not be with the humor she had? There were varying degrees of sadistic and many areas. Persephone just had to find that part of herself or acknowledge it.

Loosening his hold on the goddess' wrist, he instead placed his hand at her waist and drew her as close as he could while his other hand cupped her jaw, his thumb stroking her cheek. "Perhaps," he mused quietly. "You've only scratched the surface of your self-discovery."

It really wasn't fair. He knew exactly which buttons to push to have her forgetting all her anger in favour of paying attention to him. The way his eyes crinkled in amusement caused a funny lurch just below her left collarbone, and she only minded a little bit when he drew her close and placed his hand on her cheek.

"Self-discovery?" She arched an eyebrow, placing her hands against his chest in an attempt to keep herself from melting into his touch. "I know myself, Ares, and I certainly wasn't talking about me."

She was prone to melancholy, it was true. Her pride and self-loathing overwhelmed her in turns, and her sense of duty was truly over-developed, but a masochist she was not. She didn't revel in pain, nor enjoy inflicting it. As the goddess of spring, and by extension life and death, pain was something she dealt with rather than celebrated.

"Perhaps I misspoke," she corrected, focusing on the silver earring that hung over his shoulder as his thumb traced the curve of her cheekbone. "You revel in driving me mad, and therefore you're a sadist."

She'd never asked for this mess - for his interference in her business and emotions - and yet she almost missed him sometimes. The underworld could be a forbidding place, and when Konan was away she almost wished he were there if only to have someone to trade barbs with and keep her mind sharp.

"Perhaps that's your goal? To make me entirely unhinged," she mused, tracing a fingernail along the smooth leather of his vest. "A punishment for my husband perhaps? Having your revenge by saddling him with a deranged wife?"

Re: A Fine Frenzy

Swearing in Greek inside his head, Ares nearly froze when she repeated what he'd thought he'd said in his head. Unfortunately, Persephone had chosen that moment to place her hands on his chest. Accessing all his self-control, he focused on keeping his heartbeat a steady rhythm.

She may not have been talking about herself, and Ares agreed that he was a masochist, he disagreed with her on knowing herself. With how she had gone on before about why he would look twice at her, and now she was saying she knew herself? Did she not see that she continually changed and grew after each of their encounters? Not just the ones with himself either, he was arrogant, but he wasn't as egotistical as his father to think he was the only one helping her change. No, she had her own friends that were a part of that cycle.

An unrepentant smirk crossed his features as he agreed with her statement about driving her mad. He did revel in it. It was amusing to see just how far he could push until she either left, or pushed back enough for him to back off. His enjoyment of their conversation and closeness halted at the mention of his uncle. Ares' eyes darkened a shade at the title the man had. Neither of them deserved the fate they were handed by being forced to wed the husbands they had. Neither were good enough for either goddess.

Ares hummed as he brought his face closer to inhale her changing scent. He had a different punishment in mind for his uncle. One he wasn't going to bring up in front of her. They had fought enough over the subject and he wasn't about to bring it back into light. Nor did he like the fact that she likened their dalliance akin to punishment towards her husband. If he wanted revenge, at this point he was mostly sure he wouldn't involve her in them.

"Admit it. You were already partially there before I even came on the scene." Anyone would have to be slightly crazy after spending time in the Underworld. "This is just a more fun way of getting there."

His broad smirk had her rolling her eyes at the same time that she tipped her head to prevent the side of her face from colliding with his as he leaned in. To say that she'd been 'partially there' was an exaggeration. She'd been just fine before Hades came to take her away. She'd had a good relationship with her mother because she hadn't known any different, and had been blissfully unaware of the trouble that followed the men of Olympus.

"Don't flatter yourself," she drawled, shifting her finger from his vest to the line of his jaw, tracing it with a featherlight touch. "I was perfectly happy until you, my husband, and dear old dad came along."

Her mother had always warned her of the trouble that followed men like a loyal dog. She hadn't thought anything of it until Ares came courting all those eons ago, closely followed by her husband splitting her favourite meadow wide open and taking her away. For once, her mother's advice had been sound, if too late.

"You and I have very different definitions of the word 'fun'." This was fun - trading barbs as the warmth of him seeped into her skin. His constant pushing, pulling, prodding, and provoking, was not. She knew he could draw power from her anger, but she doubted he was stupid enough to think that she enjoyed being used as a source of power.

"Madness is hardly an appealing state," she reminded him, visions of Dionysus' wild followers springing unbidden to her mind.

Enjoying that they weren't fighting and that Persephone was once again reciprocating his affection. Sending warmth into his hand where it rested at her waist, he stroked the hipbone with his thumb. Happy, perhaps. But Ares was willing to bet she was weighted down with the boredom that plagued the rest of them all the same. Even if one was content and thought they were happy, they rarely were. Or that happiness is just brief. Gods were fickle and shallow beings, or at least most if not all of them were. Was she different? Could she have truly been happy in the entire essence of the word? Even with the overbearing mother of hers?

"We seem to have a difference of opinion on the word, 'happy' as well, highness." Ares could admit that he was as far as he knew of the surface emotion, that he was happy at the moment. Riling the goddess up was fun. The games they played with each other was amusing and he looked forward to each and every encounter, waiting for the next one with baited breath.

"That depends on the madness." Ares gave a vulpine grin. The woman in his arms drove him to madness quite a bit. It was one he would suffer gladly though. Capturing her hand on his face, he turned her hand over and kissed her wrist with the same smile mischief dancing in his eyes. "And you, your highness...Are quite catching."

With those words he stole a kiss from her before she cold react and vanished from his room only to reappeared in his temple. He might as well stay here while Persephone was in Olympus. It didn't matter to him in the slightest if she thought him cowardly for his act. The way they were going it was either try for a repeat performance from when he'd visited her room, or leave things as they were and allow her the time to seethe. She had made it quite clear that she was tired of their games and wished to have no more part in them. That caused something unpleasant in his stomach. It seemed he needed to find another set of armor to destroy.
