Re: The Bookworm's Bookshelf
Book Title: The Golden Compass
Book #of the ______ series: Book 1 of the "His Dark Materials" series.
Author:Phillip Pullman
Genre: Steampunk-ish Fantasy
Brief summary: PG13, for some controvertial theological subjects, death.
Lyra has grown up at Oxford College, raised by scholars and a particularly gruff housekeeper. But when her mysterious uncle Asriel arrives for his yearly visit, he brings with him knowledge that, coupled with her "adoption" by the glamorous Ms. Coulter, plunges Lyra into an adventure full of danger, nomadic peoples, talking bears, witches, and a strange golden, compass-like device called an alethiometer.
Reasons it's awesome: Awesome female characters everywhere! Fantastic descriptions, morally grey characters, science to back up the fantastical elements.
My fav is problematic because: Somewhat controvertial due to the way it deals with the religious aspects of the story, everyone you love dies,

Re: The Bookworm's Bookshelf
Book Title: The Eye of the World
Book #of the ______ series: Book 1 of the "Wheel of Time" series.
Author: Robert Jordan/ Brandon Sanderson (later books)
Genre: High Fantasy
Brief summary: In the village of Emonds Field, three friends are discovered by Moiraine, an Aes Sedai of the blue ajah. Unable to discern which of the three is the much- prophesied reincarnation of the famed "Dragon", who is fated to save the world, she leads all three away from the village in hopes of discovering the Dragon and saving the world from the ever-growing threat of the Shadow. Rated: PG-13, for violence and some lewd behaviour/language.
Reasons it's awesome: Well written characters, male and female, no heavy romance plots for the first several books, epic battles.
My fav is problematic because: More than a little bit sexist, action is slow to start, world-building is complex and hard to understand at the start, lots of names to remember.
Other: For Ty.

Re: The Bookworm's Bookshelf
Book Title:
Book #of the ______ series: 1 of Jig the Goblin Series
Author: Jim C. Hines
Genre: Fantasy
Brief summary: Jig is a scrawny little nearsighted goblin-a runt even among his puny species. Captured by a party of adventurers searching for a magical artifact, and forced to guide them, Jig encounters every peril ever faced on a fantasy quest. (rated like T maybe?)
Reasons it's awesome: Seriously when do you get a hero that's a goblin?
My fav is problematic because: Can't put it down and is 3 books long.
Other: For anyone that likes fantasy and funny

Re: The Bookworm's Bookshelf
Book Title: Unwind
Book #of the____ series: N/A
Author: Neal Shusterman
Genre: Sci-Fi / Dystopia
Brief summary: After the end of the Heartland War, unwanted children, rather than clogging up the state home system or being aborted, are sent to special facilities to be Unwound - that is, harvested for their body parts to satisfy the booming transplant demand. Connor, Resa, and Lev are three such children, and Unwind tells their story. Rated T
Reasons it's awesome: Very little romance, and what little romance there is doesn't trip up the plot. Resa is a BAMF and REALLY well written.
My fav is problematic because: Controversial topics - religion, abortion. An almost-rape scene. Surgical trauma.
Other: For Truth. It was the closest thing I could remember that wasn't super graphic. I hope you like it, dear!
